WA projects such as One Subiaco and Witchcliffe ecovillage dominate urban development awards

WA projects have dominated national urban development awards, with One Subiaco tower recognised as the nation’s best apartment high-rise and Witchcliffe ecovillage deemed the best overall project in the country.

WA projects won four categories in the prestigious Urban Development Institute of Australia awards in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

It is considered the pinnacle of achievement in the sector.

Tanya Steinbeck, chief executive of the UDIA WA, said the State’s incredible result reflects the quality and diversity of local projects.

“Not only are we so proud of these West Aussie projects, but these award winners are also a reflection of the diversity and changing face of Perth and the regions,” she said.

“Our industry is clearly leading the way when it comes to innovation, great design and of course liveability.,” Ms Steinbeck said.

Witchcliffe Ecovillage by Sustainable Settlements and Perron Developments was recognised for being one of the most sustainable urban developments in the world.

The project was won the award for excellence in the sustainability category, and also took home the major gong for the evening, the Project of the Year.

The judges praised the the carbon negative community for showcasing innovative approaches to sustainability across a range of areas, and delivering affordable housing options within a vibrant rural community setting.

Blackburne Developments was recognised in Apartments (High Rise) category, with the judges recognising the tower as a major catalyst for the rejuvenation of Subiaco.

The judges said the tower had set a quality example of how infill development can benefit local communities through outstanding design and amenity.

Paul Blackburne said the Subiaco tower was about more than bricks and mortar – it was about creating communities.

“This is great recognition and validation that our vision for bringing a new style of apartment living to WA,” he said.

“Our entire team are driven by creating something new and unique with every project.

“We are creating new communities as well as new building. The most local purchasers love their new home and each project we do frees up around 200 local homes for new families to move into the area.”

The Exchange at Curtin University, by Curtin University, won the top honour In the Masterplanned Communities category.

Judges noted Curtin Exchange showcased how a university can integrate with the local community through its student teaching facilities and accommodation, hotel, commercial enterprises, retail, social and sporting facilities.

Henley Brook by Mirvac, won in the Residential Subdivision category, which was praised for preserving the rural character of the location by maintaining more than 600 mature trees and rejuvenating an existing stream and orchard. The gas pipeline reserve was turned into a useable recreation space.
