A piece of Subiaco history is being transformed to restore its status as a residential and retail mecca.

Demolition of the old Pavilion Market finally started today to make way for a multi-million dollar development.

“This is really the beginning of a new era in Subiaco and we are going to see a huge transformation in Subiaco over the next five years,” property developer Paul Blackburne said.

The markets will be replaced by a 24-storey building in the heart of a suburb. It will boast hundreds of apartments – including a $15 million penthouse – a micro-brewery, restaurants and market stalls.

Some of the original timber floors here at the market site will be saved, and used on the ground floor of the new development, you can also choose to have a little piece of history in your apartment.

“If they would like, to have the restored original floor boards in their apartment,” Mr Blackburne said.

Other historic pieces will be preserved at the local museum.

“It’s a big injection of confidence and businesses welcome it,” Subiaco mayor Penny Taylor said.

Construction is set to begin next year and finish in three years.
